Fitchburg, 7-Dec-2008--Steve was born in Springfield, MA, and lived in Ohio, New York, and New Jersey before earning BA and MA degrees, and meeting Nancy, his wife of 36 years, at The Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore. Doctoral studies took them back to New York, where he earned a Ph.D. in ecology and statistics at Cornell University, and where their two daughters were born.
Steve taught aquatic ecology and statistics at the State University of New York, College at Brockport, where he became involved with developing and distributing Minitab statistical software. After four years, he left teaching to work on Minitab full time at The Pennsylvania State University.
In 1983, Penn State's Minitab Project was spun off from the university. Steve and his family came to Madison, where Steve helped found one of the two successor companies. Nancy, a nurse, appreciated the abundant health care carreer opportunities in Madison. Steve worked as product manager for networking software and as a systems integration consultant.
In 1991, Steve founded Arnold Consulting, Inc., an independent source of expertise on electronic mail servers. Steve's company has a national and international clientele. Clients include the Executive Office of the President, other federal government and military agencies, corporate giants like Ericsson and Fidelity Investments, and many colleges and universities.
